19-year-old Ariel Winter has given a new interview in which she claims her mum “sexualised” her as a child by making her wear revealing clothing at a young age.

Ariel told The Hollywood Reporter that she’d had a “really rough childhood” due to her controlling mother Crystal Workman.

The Modern Family actress said that from the age of seven, she was dressed in "the smallest miniskirts, sailor suits, low-cut things, the shortest dresses you've ever seen.

“People thought I was 24 when I was 12. If there was going to be a nude scene when I was that age, my mother would have a thousand percent said yes”.

Ariel’s father Glenn “opted out a little bit”, leaving the young actress solely in the care of her mother.

Ariel, who began acting at four years old said she wasn’t allowed be friends with other girls “because females are competition- that’s how some people see it” and was under intense pressure to land acting jobs.

She also claimed her mother restricted her food intake and pushed her to focus on acting rather than her education.

Ariel was removed from her mother’s care in 2012, after allegations of child abuse and went to live with her older sister Shanelle Gray who became her legal guardian.

Ariel claimed her mother slapped her, called her names, and insulted her. Her mother denied all these allegations. At age 17, the young star won the right to be emancipated from her mother.

Ariel broke the news of her emancipation on social media writing: “I am now officially emancipated!!! I'm really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity”.

The teen actress struggled with her body image down through the years and has had a tough time with the tabloids, who have often made a point of commenting on her outfits and body.

Ariel is now attending college at UCLA and hopes to set up a charity for abused children and adults one day.

“Even though I wish I had a better childhood, I wouldn't trade it, because it made me who I am today," she said. "I still respect the people that hurt me”.

The young woman hasn't spoken to her mother in five years, which she believes is for the best.
