He's known for his incredibly cheery demeanour and relatable sense of humour, but popular stand-up comedian, Patrick Kielty, has experienced more than his fair share of sorrow.

As a teen growing up during the height of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, Patrick experienced a devastating loss when his father, Jack, was gunned down by the Loyalist Ulster Freedom Fighters.

Just 16 at the time of his father's tragic passing in 1988, Patrick recalls struggling to focus on the future, preferring instead to navigate day-to-day life as best he could.

Reflecting on the devastating event in his family's personal history, 44-year-old Patrick said: "At the time you think 'Let's just get through the next day.'"

Acknowledging the impact his father's death had on younger siblings, Patrick, who married Cat Deeley in 2012, said: "My younger brother Cathal was just 11 at the time and I think it was much harder for him because he was still a kid."

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Patrick, who is now approaching the same age his father was at the time of his death, pays tribute to the man who brought him up and seemed keen to acknowledge the unpredictability of life.

"My dad would get a great kick out of how my life is at the minute, so that's what I miss" he reveals.

Understandably reluctant to take circumstances for granted, Patrick explains: "I'm 44 now and my dad died when he was 45. You never know what's around the corner."

Patrick will be appearing at the at Edinburgh's Fringe Festival this year.
