Kensington Palace issued a press release at 11am this morning naming the five individuals chosen as Princess Charlotte's godparents.

But without bookie favourites, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie making the cut, the public were left wondering exactly who has been honoured with the coveted role.

The chosen five are friends and relatives of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and signify the long-term bonds they have with former classmates and extended family members.

The Hon. Laura Fellowes

Paying tribute to his late mother's side of the family, Prince William chose his cousin Laura Fellowes who is the daughter of Princess Diana's sister, Lady Jane Fellowes.

Ms. Fellowes will be in attendance today with her husband, Nick Pettman.

Mr. Thomas van Straubenzee

With a nod to his life at Eton, Princess Charlotte's father chose two classmates to act as his daughter's godparents.

Thomas van Straubenzee was educated alongside Prince William and also travelled extensively with him during their gap year from university.

Mr. James Meade

James Meade enjoys a particularly close bond with the prince having also attended Eton alongside the dad-of-two.

Both Thomas and James were the only classmates of Prince William's invited to speak at his and Kate's wedding reception in 2011.

Miss. Sophie Carter

Kate's long-term friend and tennis partner, Sophie Carter, was also honoured with the role and is understood to be one of the Duchess' main confidantes.

Sophie can be seen at numerous royal gatherings and social events organised by the Duchess of Cambridge.

Mr. Adam Middleton

Paying tribute to the Middletons, Kate, like her husband, chose a cousin to represent her side of the family today.

Adam Middleton is the 33-year-old son of Kate's uncle Richard and recently married at a ceremony which was attended by the Duchess and her family last year.

Congratulations to today's godparents!
