The Good Snack Company was started two years ago by Matt Henchie and Stuart Allen because they got fed up with the lack of choice for consumers when it came to tasty, nutritious snacks. People looking for a quick snack or an energy boost often grab a chocolate bar or a can of coke, which tend to be conveniently located at the till in petrol stations, convenience stores and even the supermarket.

Matt and Stuart originally worked for Innocent Drinks and realised that one of the big selling points was its association with a healthy lifestyle and clean living. They also noticed that the Irish palate had become very broad and formerly exotic foodstuffs were now commonplace on our supermarket shelves. They felt that the existing healthy snacks were boring and had little appeal to the consumer in a hurry, things like rice cakes and crackers, all of which are sold in large packs. Where were the delicious, natural snacks consumers could enjoy without feeling guilty?

We found their healthy range of snacks in handy 30g and 50g packs and also they have a range of 145g share packs. The selection is fantastic, all are either nuts or dried fruit and some have a delicious twist: yogurt raisins, chilli cashews, fruit granola, etc.

To date the snack market in petrol stations and convenience stores has been dominated by chocolate, crisps and bakery items (muffins, scones, etc) and it is refreshing to find a product that offers great taste, value for money and with the added bonus of being healthy and nutritious. When the kids are howling at the checkout - and we all cave in at some point - wouldn't you rather they eat a healthy treat? Priced at approx €1.29 for the smaller packs, we found this product to be very competitive.

Stockists: Spar, Topaz, Dunnes and Superquinn.
