Modern Family actress Ariel Winter and her mother, Crystal Workman, have not been on speaking terms for several years now. She was removed from her mother’s care in 2012, after allegations of child abuse.

Ariel claimed her mother had slapped her, called her names, and insulted her. Her mother denied all these allegations. At age 17, the young star won the right to be emancipated from her mother.

Crystal recently gave a scathing interview to InTouch magazine, saying Ariel ought to “put some clothes on” and “grow up”.

Crystal commented on her daughter’s appearance, saying: “I would tell her to dress properly, be the beautiful person she is. I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary. Ariel is smart, beautiful, and talented. She is a legitimate actress.

"She does not need to do this. She is beautiful with her clothes on.”

Ariel, who is now 19, hit back with a series of online posts which were clearly aimed at her “toxic” mother.

She responded with a pointed tweet, saying: “What's sad is that you lie consistently. Also, why is it that you only choose to talk to me through the press? I'm doing just fine. Toxic.”

She also posted a photo to her Instagram account, calling out those who shame women based on their choice of clothing. The actress has had a tough time with the tabloids, who have often made a point of commenting on her outfits and body.

Ariel’s mother claimed that Ariel started the feud to further her career, saying: "I didn't start this battle. I haven't seen her in three-and-a-half years. I think Ariel is conjuring up stories to help her career at my expense, and I feel as a parent I am being bullied.

“She was begging me, 'I want to be on TV'. She would say, 'I can do better than your clients'. She has never been pushed into the industry. Ariel has wanted to be in the industry since she was five years old."

The actress moved in with her older sister, Shannelle Gray, after being removed from her mother’s care; and her sister later became her legal guardian.

After becoming emancipated from her mother, Ariel said: “I am now officially emancipated!!! I'm really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity.”
