As any new mum can attest, becoming pregnant, giving birth and welcoming a child into your life can be emotionally draining at the best of times.
Acknowledging this while speaking at a recent launch, much-loved RTÉ presenter, Jennifer Maguire, opened up about her own post-birth experience and revealed that, at times, she struggled with the new dynamic.
Like many new mums, Jennifer admits she was stunned by her mood, saying: "I thought I was losing my mind two weeks after I had the baby. Literally I was at home and I think Lau dropped a cushion on the ground and I was upstairs crying."
For a fortnight following the birth of baby Florence, the popular 2FM anchor experienced a downturn in her mood which she couldn't account for, saying: "Just for no reason, it was just the weirdest two weeks I’ve ever had."
33-year-old Jennifer, who returned to work ten weeks after Florence's arrival in March, admits she struggled with her decision and ultimately questioned whether she had made the right choice.
"I do feel guilt, I do. I went back to work after 10 weeks and that was a decision I made before I had her. In hindsight, I would probably have taken a bit longer off," she reveals.
Passionate about her job while utterly devoted to baby Florence, Jennifer accepts it's difficult to strike a perfect balance between work and motherhood.
"Somebody said to me, “You need another pair of hands, you need somebody to take Florence,” and that’s the opposite of what I need, because I want to mind her all the time and work, giving 100%. You want to do both, so you just have to try and find a balance," she accepts.
Jennifer married husband, Lau, on July 1st 2014 in Co. Monaghan.
