He spent much of his teens in the headlines for his behaviour, but this singer is now trying to do a major image overhaul and redeem himself in the public eye.

However, while fans have been quick to welcome Justin Bieber back with open arms, it seems his mum is not as quick to forgive.

Talking to Billboard magazine, the 21-year-old admitted that he distanced himself from his mum, Pattie, because he knew she was disappointed in him.

Explaining how he is trying to fix their relationship, the Baby hitmaker said: "We spent some time not talking, so it takes time to rebuild that trust."

Pattie raised the star as a single mum and the pair were incredibly close, with Bieber crediting her for supporting his career.

However, the star went into a downward spiral between 2013 and 2014 – a time he admits he struggled through – and certain things broke his trust with people.

“I felt like people were judging me all the time. I came out alive. I came out swinging. But I was close to letting [fame] completely destroy me," he said.

His father, Jeremy, left when the singer was just four, but returned a year later and the father son duo have reconnected.

“There's a misconception that he's this deadbeat dad, but he has been in my life since. I was with him on weekends and Wednesdays,” he said of his father.

"My dad told me this the other day: ‘Pride is your worst enemy. It’ll pull greatness out of you.’ I just thought that’s so great, because he’s a prideful man -- he has always known what’s best -- and it has taken him this long to see that."
