We all struggle to get through the morning at the best of times. The school run alone can leave us feeling frazzled before we even reach 9 am. However, one thing that makes the early rises worth it is breakfast.
We just can’t get enough of breakfast food- toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereal, a full Irish, porridge, coffee, yoghurts. It is all too delicious.
However, many people are guilty of skipping the first meal of the day and it could be having quite a negative impact on your health.
A new study has found that skipping breakfast can increase your risk of heart disease.
The study, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, claims that people who avoid the morning meal have an 87 percent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases.
The team analysed the dietary habits of 6,550 people for this study. 5 percent of the group never ate breakfast, 10 percent rarely did, 25 percent ate it some days and 59 percent ate it every day.
During the study, over 2,000 participants died. Of the 2,318 that died, 619 died due to cardiovascular disease.
The team looked at the age, sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, dietary and lifestyle factors, body mass index, and cardiovascular risk factors, before concluding that those who didn’t eat breakfast were at a higher risk of dying from stroke or heart disease.
The study shows the importance of eating a balanced and healthy breakfast, but researchers said more research is necessary.
