By now, your teen is more in control of their moods and emotions. They will form stronger relationships and bonds with peers.  They will start to think about their future and about what they are going to do after college. Parents may notice that their teen becomes more responsible at this age. 
 
17 year olds become less moody
Generally, a 17 year old teen's moods are calmer than they were when they were younger. This is due to less teen angst and the fact that they more of a say over their own lives. There will still be some ups-and-downs but all in all by now they should be learning to handle their emotions.
 
17 year olds should be excited about their future
Being 17 means dreaming and looking forward to the future, finishing school, getting exam results and going out into the big world. Right now the future seems like an exciting adventure.
Teens will talk about when they go to college and look forward to living away from home.
 
Rules will need to be reinforced
Your teen will know about the family rules about drinking, taking drugs and other risky youth behaviours but it's still important that you reinforce these rules and know where your teen is and what they are doing.
