A 13-year-old boy has died after being accidentally shot by his 15-year-old brother in an ill-fated game of 'cops and robbers'.

Suhayb Hassan was killed in his Minnesota home on Sunday morning after he and his brother discovered their father's gun and decided to use it as a toy.

Suhayb's older brother contacted the police and told them on their arrival that he had shot his brother.

Detective Desiree Schroepfer commented on the older brother's demeanour, saying: "I believe at the time he was very scared because he knew he wasn't supposed to be playing with the firearm."

Suhayb was shot in the chest during the game and died at the scene despite paramedic's attempts to revive the eight grade student.

Suhayb's younger sister was also in the house at the time of the incident. but did not witness the event.

The police believe the shooting 'appears to be a horrible accident', but their investigation of the scene will be presented for review to the Dakota County Attorney's Office.

The three children were home alone at the time of the shooting.

The tragic event comes just weeks after a five-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his infant brother.
