A high school in the US has come under fire amid claims that it photoshopped students’ photos to make them appear thinner.
A student took to social networking site Reddit to criticise the school for altering the shape of her face on an ID card that was reissued without explanation to her and other pupils.
As well as making the girl’s face appear thinner, the new, altered image shows face smoothing, eyebrow reshaping and even lip recolouring.
The Reddit user, known only by her handle ‘love_a_good_ood’, was understandably outraged by the move.
“I have a round face that I have grown to love and now I get my photo back with a different face. The new photo no longer even looks like me but rather a prettier twins sisters,” she wrote.
She condemned the school for its move, suggesting that it is teaching poor body image and acceptance by photoshopping the students’ photos.
“Going to an all-girls school, we are constantly reminded about positive body image and accepting ourselves for who we are. Having these changes made to make me appear thinner makes me wonder how much our school practices what they preach,” she added.
The Reddit user returned to the discussion thread to reveal that she had brought the issue up with school management, who informed her that the retouches were made by the photography company they had used for the shoot.
She said that the school had made the decision to use the original, unedited versions for the school yearbook.
