The bathroom is meant to be the place you get nice and clean, but some mistakes all of us make on a daily basis can defeat the whole purpose of this space.

Here are some of the most common mistakes you’re making in the bathroom, and tips on how to fix them.

Reusing your bath towel too many times
Bacteria thrive in damp, tightly woven wet towels. When you reuse them, the bacteria can end up back on you, even when you’ve just stepped out of the bath. It’s a good idea to use a new towel every day if you share with someone else, and more than once per week, if you're the only one using it.

Not washing your hands for long enough
Hand washing is one of the most important things we can do to reduce the spread of germs, but most of us are still doing it wrong.  Experts recommend you spend 20 seconds scrubbing alone, before carefully washing off soap and drying properly.

Keeping your toothbrush too close to the toilet
Studies show that every time you flush, aerosolised particles from the toilet float as far as six feet away. So, close the toilet lid before you flush and wash or replace your toothbrush regularly.

Not trimming your shower curtain liner to fit the tub
Where the shower liner hits the tub and where it ripples, as a result of being too wide, are breeding grounds for mould and mildew. One simple solution is to trim a few inches from the bottom and sides so it fits the tub perfectly without bunching.

Walking on your bathroom floor barefoot
Studies have shown that the bathroom floor actually harbours the most bacteria in the room – around two million per square inch. Scrub your bathroom floor frequently or invest in a pair of shower shoes or bathroom slippers.
