Marriage is not all walks in the park and candlelit dinners, it is tough and needs work to ensure it stays strong and healthy.
From dealing with parenthood to money issues and even work problems, there are plenty of things that can rock your relationship and make it unstable. However, with a little bit of work, time and effort you can enjoy a happy marriage for a long time to come, no matter what life throws at you.
1. You both need to work at your relationship
A marriage should not be a one-sided affair – if it is you are really in trouble. Whether you are a stay-at-home mum, the main bread earner or you work part-time while your other half works long hours, both of you are working to create a balance that works. And neither of you is doing any more than the other.
2. You will never come to a resolution when angry
You need to give yourself time and space if you are looking for a resolution to your problems. Shouting what you want to happen or becoming upset when your other half criticises you will never help you come to a workable and agreeable resolution. Give yourself time to cool off before trying to fix the issue at hand.
3. You need to put your marriage first
This includes before work, friends and even your own interests. While it doesn’t mean you have to give up who you are it does mean that your partner needs to be your number one priority.
4. Know that you can be wrong
If your actions or things you say are starting to damage your relationship it is important you try to fix them. Be tough on yourself to make changes that are really needed, and never assume that your other half is the only one who needs to change if something is going wrong.
5. Discuss important things when out of the house
One of the most frustrating things when you start to discuss important topics is for a heated argument to ensue and for someone to walk off. Try to discuss important subjects when it is just the two of you and you have nowhere to walk off to; go for a walk or a hike and get it out in the open.
