Unless you have ever been in the situation where you or someone you love requires rehab, it can be very difficult understanding just how hard it is to deal with.

Which is why the opening of Smarmore Castle Private Clinic should be welcomed with open arms, as it gives people a place to go for help, where their illness is completely understood.

The medieval 14th century Smarmore Castle has been renovated to create an impressive environment dedicated to treating alcohol, drug and gambling addiction. Based in Co. Louth and just a 45 minute drive from Dublin, the in-patient clinic features 22 beds, a large leisure and fitness centre and 15 acres of grounds.

“We are delighted to be combining over 30 years of expertise and our high success rates in the field of addiction with the exceptional facilities here at Smarmore,” said Peter McCann, a Trinity College Dublin graduate and co-founder of Smarmore Castle and Castle Craig Hospital.

“We are committed to tackling alcoholism and drug addiction and the suffering it brings to families and we see a need in Ireland for more high-quality treatment services.”

Patients at Smarmore Castle Private Clinic will be under the care of a highly experienced medical team, including a Consultant Psychiatrist and an addiction specialist GP, as well as clinical psychologist Nathan Rogerson, who is the clinic’s manager.

Smarmore will be the first addiction service in Ireland to adopt Castle Craig’s internationally regarded treatment model which is accredited with Intertek ISO 9001:2008. This model of care has been developed over 30 years ago by Dr Margaret Ann McCann (née McKeague), a University College Dublin graduate, and co-founder of both Castle Craig and Smarmore.

Treatment includes medical and psychiatric assessment, detoxification as well as specialist therapies including 12 step facilitation and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The complementary therapies on offer include equine (horse) therapy, aqua yoga and fitness instruction.

Patients from Ireland can currently be admitted to Smarmore Castle with private funding. All private health insurers as well as the HSE, have been approached with the aim of achieving ‘preferred provider’ status for Smarmore Castle Private Clinic.
