Actress Zoe Saldana has told Refinery29 that she sometimes buys girls’ clothing for her young sons.

Zoe, who is mum to baby Zen and two-year-old twins, Bowie and Cy, explains that when clothes shopping for her boys, they often find themselves in the girls’ section.

She says she’s happy to buy an item of girls’ clothing for her kids if they particularly like the design or colour.

“We choose it because they need pants, they need shirts, and things like that,” she said.

“But if they have a preference of a color or a shape or a person or an animal or a story, we will never choose things for them because of their gender.”

Zoe says that her twins have actually been mistaken for girls because she and her husband, artist Marco Perego, dress them “quite colorfully.”

In a previous interview with People, she said that her twins particularly disliked the “masculine” shoes she’d bought for them. “So they have different pairs of glittery, bright pink trainers, and those are the shoes that they always choose.

"We get them their masculine ones. They don’t like those. They want the glitter, the glitter bright pink ones, and we’re like, so be it.”

She also said her sons like wearing leggings and different colours which are hard to find in the boys’ section.

“Sometimes when we can’t find something that we need, we’ll go to the girls’ section, and we like seeing our kids, our boys, in pastel, bright pink colours, and they like it as well,” she continued.

“So I guess that it starts very young, as children, we gravitate towards colour, and sometimes the boys section can just be very grey and dark.

"So we find ourselves always sliding into the girls’ section, and we have fun.”

Zoe also said she doesn’t show all of her movies to her boys, instead selecting scenes that she feels are appropriate and playing those to them.

Zoe is known for her laid back approach to parenting and she tries to shield her children from the media as much as possible. In fact, the actress surprised everyone back in February when she announced the tot’s arrival on Instagram.

The mum wrote underneath: “Marco and I are elated to share the news of the birth of our son Zen. We couldn’t feel more blessed with the new addition to our family, #threeboys... oh boy!"
