This new Dublin womens health centre promises truly integrated care under one roof

Hands up who's ever sat in a specialist's waiting room, mentally calculating how many phone calls you'll need to make to book the next appointment with another specialist, in another hospital, on another side of the city? And that's before you've even factored in childcare, work meetings, and the school pick-up. Women's health shouldn't feel like a logistical nightmare, but let's be honest – it often does.

That's why the recent opening of the Blackrock Health Womens Health Centre in Dublin 2 has genuinely caught my attention. Not just because it's shiny and new (though it is – there's been a €16 million investment behind it), but because of what it's actually promising: integrated care, all under one roof, specifically designed with women's needs in mind.

What makes this different?

Here's the thing that really sets this centre apart from the usual "here's a list of specialists you can ring yourself" approach. The Blackrock Health Womens Health Centre is Ireland's most comprehensive private, consultant-led facility dedicated entirely to women's health, and it's built around the idea that our health concerns don't exist in neat, separate boxes.

Picture this: you see a gynaecologist about an issue, and instead of being handed a referral letter and sent on your way to figure out the next steps yourself, you're connected directly with a dietitian, or a physiotherapist, or whatever other specialist support might help you. It's all part of their holistic care model. No more juggling multiple appointments across multiple locations with multiple waiting lists.

The centre has brought together a team of 28 consultants, four women's medicine specialists, and 30 allied healthcare professionals. That's a serious amount of expertise, all working collaboratively to look after women at every stage of life.

"The Blackrock Health Womens Health Centre brings together an exceptional team of specialists across a wide range of disciplines," explains Dr Caoimhe Hartley, Clinical Lead Women's Medicine and GP at the centre. "This collaborative approach allows us to provide truly integrated care, addressing the interconnected nature of women's health needs."

What services are on offer?

The centre offers consultant-led clinics covering pretty much every area of women's health you can think of: gynaecology, urology, breast health, endocrinology, gastroenterology, pain medicine, cardiology, dermatology, psychology, health screening, and rheumatology. There's also a full suite of nursing and allied health services, including physiotherapy, phlebotomy, and radiology diagnostics like DXA scanning, mammography, and ultrasound.

The clinical team is led by Professor Donal Brennan, Clinical Director and Gynaecological Oncologist, alongside experts like Dr. Gerry Agnew (Clinical Lead Urogynaecology) and Professor Kirk Levins (Pain Medicine). It's reassuring to know there's that level of experience and specialism available.

What I particularly appreciate is that this isn't just about treating illness. The centre also focuses on preventative care and overall well-being – which is something we're all terrible at prioritising when we're busy looking after everyone else. Health screening, nutrition support, and psychological services all sit alongside the medical treatments, which feels like a much more realistic approach to how we actually need to look after ourselves.

Why this matters for Irish mums

Let's be real: as mums, we're brilliant at making sure everyone else gets to their appointments, but our own health often slides down the priority list. Between the school runs, work deadlines, GAA training, homework battles, and the endless mental load, booking and attending multiple specialist appointments can feel genuinely overwhelming.

The Blackrock Health Womens Health Centre is located at 2-5 Warrington Place in Dublin 2, and they're accepting Healthlink referrals for their services. Dr. Caroline Whelan, Group CEO of Blackrock Health, describes the opening as "a new chapter in dedicated women's healthcare" – and frankly, it's about time.

The centre also aligns with the Women's Health Action Plan 2024-2025, which aims to address critical gaps in current services. There's been a real shift in recent years towards taking women's health more seriously (finally!), and this kind of integrated, specialist facility is exactly what's needed to turn all that talk into actual, accessible care.

It's worth noting that even Lorraine Keane, who's ambassador for the centre, has been sharing her experience and insights on Instagram if you want a more personal take on what's on offer.

Of course, this is private healthcare, so it's not going to be an option for everyone. But for those with health insurance or the means to self-pay, having this kind of comprehensive, joined-up care available in one central Dublin location could be genuinely life-changing – or at the very least, schedule-changing, which sometimes feels just as important when you're trying to keep all the plates spinning.
