Actor Josh Duhamel says he’s glad he became a dad later in life and admits he’s not as “patient” as wife Fergie with their young son Axl.

Josh spoke about his experiences as a dad on The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently.

“She is definitely more evolved than I am, and more patient,” the Hollywood action hero said of his singer wife Fergie.

“Having a kid at 40 years old is much different than having one at 22, you know, so I'm a little more mature than I was then,” Josh, 44, admitted.

“I'm just doing the best that I can, trying not to screw him up for life. You never know."

Josh said he hopes his little boy will get involved in sports when he is older for several reasons.

“You learn how to win and lose and be on a team. He doesn't need to be a professional athlete, but he should learn how to be on a team and compete because that's what the real world is about.”

He said he would encourage Axl as much as possible to get involved. “I'm totally going to be that dad. I'll be the dad on the sidelines coaching,” Josh said.

He admitted that Axl hasn’t shown great interest in sports yet, despite Josh taking him to several baseball games.

He explained that Axl is more interested in playing with other kids around him. “I’ve taken him to two games now. He's not so much into the baseball as he is finding other kids to hang out with and steal cotton candy from.

“Last time, he found a little girl around his age and he went and sat with her and they had a great time.”

However, while Axl may not be so interested in sports, he does have one favourite hobby.

Josh made the hilarious revelation that the three-year-old is obsessed with sticks, according to People.

“He’s all about spooky stories, taking sticks from the park and turning them into stuff. We literally have a pile of sticks at our house. We could have a giant bonfire at any moment.”

It sounds like young Axl has a great imagination as the sticks are more than mere sticks to him.

Josh explained: “To him, they’re something. He doesn’t want to go anywhere without them because they’re either a sword or a magic wand.”

How cute- we all know a kid with a similar imagination!
