She was recently praised for talking about the conception of her two-year-old son, and now TV star and stylist Mary Portas has spoken candidly about an upsetting incident involving her little boy.
Mary, who is mum to two-year-old Horatio with her wife Melanie Rickey, this week revealed that a priest refused to baptise her son.
The Mary, Queen of Shops presenter made the revelation while reading excerpts from her new book at the Hay Festival in Wales.
The 54-year-old explained how she had wanted to have Horatio baptised in a Catholic ceremony, but she was left disappointed by how the priest reacted towards her and her family.
“In the church, I went up with Horatio to the priest in the Baptist class, and I could see he was just uncomfortable. I wanted him to know that we were the parents and was he comfortable with that,” she said.
While Mary admits that she could understand his inner struggle, she was left completely deflated by the priest’s decision.
“I felt bad because I was stressing him out, but I wanted to stand my ground. He said: ‘I’m not baptising you’. Well, that was it,” she said, adding, “I stood up and said: ‘I can’t do this.’”
Mary did, however, reveal that upon reaching out to the priest in question over the incident, she was heartened to receive a letter back from him, asking her to pray for him.
Mary, who is also mum to son Mylo and daughter Verity from her first marriage to Graham Portas, welcomed Horatio two years ago. She recently revealed that Horatio was conceived after her brother agreed to donate sperm to her wife.
