From Weeds creator Jenji Kohan comes Orange is the New Black, a women's prison drama with comedy that takes no prisoners.

Based on the acclaimed memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, the series is about engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman, whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex results in her arrest and year-long detention in a federal penitentiary.

To pay her debt to society, Piper must trade her comfortable New York life with fiancé Larry, for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture where she is forced to question everything she believes about herself and the world at large. As she struggles to adjust to her new reality, she finds unexpected laughter, tears, conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric and outspoken group of inmates.

Orange is the New Black consists of 13 one-hour episodes and is available to watch on Netflix instantly. New to Netflix?  No problem - sign up here.

So ... is this like based on a true story? It seems a little far fetched to me. I've watched four episodes and I'm not convinved. Although I'm not sure it could have been done any better, I guess I'm just not that into it. I find Piper irritating, as is her silly friend / business partner and her fiance larry is a dope. I'll keep watching it, but honestly, I can't see myself changing my mind.

And nice to see mostly no-namers in it (except for Jason Biggs of course - who incidentally will never, in my eyes, get away from American Pie, but how and ever). I haven't quite finished Series 1, but am nearly there and still enjoying it.
Totally agree fizzmum99, Jason Biggs is so wrong for this part.

I'm quite enjoying this show, although I really thought I wouldn't. Feel really sorry for most of them (except for crazy religious lady and btw she deserved EVERYTHING she got) especially the one that got out and then got herself sent back in becuase there was nothing on the outside for her. Desperate and probably the most realistic story line of all. Not everyone can be rehab'd back into normal life after prison, but without any help, guidance and support, there's not evenn a choice there. I'd imagine it's the same in Ireland too. Sad but true.

Great show ... only signed up with Netflix to watch it and I love it. I guess it's intentionally but all the male characters are complete jerks ... even the kinda nice guard is a fool.

Aside from wanting to slap larry repeatedly across the face... it's not a bad show. I hope they split up in the next series, and she finds somebody else. He's a bit of a creep. Even when the flash backed to the first time they met ... he was creepy then. How did she fall for him? Noooooo. Step away from the Biggs.

They're just about finished shooting it, so we can expect the new season to air pretty soon I would imagine.

It's won Best Emsemble Cast at the Satellite awards this year already, which is not surprising in the least.

I really want to find out Red's whole story, I'm hanging by a thread here!!! :D

I'm not mad on Biggs either tbh, he's the extreme opposite of what we are led to believe is Piper's type. Too homely, too whingy, too ughh.

OK I've watched it all now, and it's actually not half bad. From a very unimpresive first episode, I got really into it. Shame there is only one Series. Roll on Series 2.

I'm glad somebody else thinks like this - he's totally yuck. I reckon they do split up next season, I was thinking, Piper is only meant to be in there for 15 months - they're hardly going to write out the main character (although look what they did with Brody in Homeland!!) I think she comes to her sense, dumps him and has an affair with Nicky. And when Alex finds out she goes mental, attacks Piper and they both have their sentances lengthened. Well that's my thoughts anway. I know I should've been a screen writer
This is fantastic anniemac - you really made me laugh. I hadn't even thought of that, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for your name in the credits next season. *winks*

Have been watching this for the last week and am totally bereft now I've finished season 1. What am I going to do now? There is literally nothing else that is holding my interest on TV. And also, I'm dying to see if anniemac's predictions are true for Piper and Larry.
Good work Netlfix, great show.

And I cannot believe Larry went on air telling the world everything that Piper said. For me that's the most unrealistic part - what husband would do that???
Completely agree mamatofive - I fast foward the opening credits, veeeeery annoying. And you're right - who would tell all of that live on air? Selfish self centred toad.

Ha ha ha .. I'm so glad you asked that shanesmom, I don't have the answer, but maybe somebody else will. Or else we'll have to wait until the next episode :(

Rubbish. This really is one of the weakest shows I've seen in a while. Stuck it out right until the end and watched all the episodes, sorry ladies, this one isn't for me.
