However much we might love the royal family (here at MummyPages, that's a whole lot), they aren't exactly known as being progressive. Or at least, they weren't.

Times are changing. With Prince Harry's marriage to Meghan Markle (now Duchess of Sussex), a former actress of mixed heritage and once divorced, you might say the British Monarchy is, at last, moving with the times and injecting a much-needed dose of modernity to the crown.

Further proof of this would also be the lovely news this week that the Queen's cousin has made history and just became the first royal to have a same-sex wedding.

In a delightful ceremony and only a couple of months after the news was shared, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, the Queen's cousin, has become the first member of the royal family to wed and have a same-sex wedding.

Lord Ivar tied the knot with his partner, James Coyle, in front of family and friends at a country house in Devon this weekend. His three daughters were in attendance along with his ex-wife Penny, who Ivar has remained close with since their split in 2011, following 17 years of marriage.

"Well we did it finally! It was an amazing day despite the miserable British weather... Most importantly a massive thanks to my 3 gorgeous girls for being so understanding and supportive, without their support this could never have happened! And finally, the biggest thank you to James for being just perfect....." Ivar wrote on Instagram.

In a touching detail, it was Penny who walked her former partner down the aisle at the ceremony, after Ivar revealed he had asked her to be a part of his big day, in a post shared on social media back in June.

"Future and former spouses. My daughters decided it was only right their Mum should walk me down the aisle and give me away to James," he wrote.

Speaking about his decision to marry James, Ivar said: "I have had the whole marriage thing - and been very happy - but James hasn't, so I see it as a validation of my love for him."

Congratulations to the couple on their wonderful day.
