Prince William and his younger brother Prince Harry were only 15, and 12, respectively, when they lost their beloved mother Diana.

Now the young royals have opened up about the difficult loss, with Harry explaining that they “never really talked about losing Mum.”

The brothers are taking part in Heads Together, a campaign to promote talking about mental health, along with Kate Middleton, according to The Mail Online.

A video captures the candid conversation between the young royals as they reflected on the growth of the campaign and their own personal experiences.

Harry and William discuss their experiences of grief and loss during the video released to support the campaign. Kate pays tribute to their mother Diana, saying that it was amazing how they had coped with such a sad loss.

“Considering what you boys sadly went through, the trauma that you experienced…I think it's incredible how strong (you are) and how you've been able to cope really,” she said.

“I put that down to your really early years, your childhood experience.”

Kate also paid tribute to the princes' “amazingly close” relationship, saying it had obviously been a big help.

“Most of the time,” William joked, adding: “We've probably been brought closer because of the circumstances.”

The royals have been promoting positive mental health over the course of the past five days, with each of them opening up about their own personal circumstances.

Harry gave an interview to The Daily Telegraph earlier this week, where he explained that it took him years to deal with the aftermath of Diana’s death.

“I always thought, what's the point of bringing up something that's only going to make you sad. It ain't going to change it. It ain't going to bring her back,” he said.

“When you speak to other people's families and little kids and stuff you think ‘wow, I don't want them to go through the same things’,” he explained.

“With a little bit of experience you want to do everything you can to help to stop them bottling it up.”

William also opened up on his own grief following Diana’s death and Kate talked about struggling with feelings of “loneliness and isolation” after becoming a mother.

The film also explains the story behind the Heads Together campaign and the goal of promoting the power of conversations – both to destroy stigma on mental health and to help people access help.

A spokesman for Kensington Palace said: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have been overwhelmed by the response to the Heads Together campaign.

“We are in the middle of a truly national conversation on mental health.

“They are incredibly grateful to everyone who has shared their stories in recent weeks.”
