What is weaning?

Weaning is the process of introducing your baby to solid foods. In the early stages, a very young baby gets all they need nutritionally from milk, however as they grow older and start to use more energy, milk alone is no longer sufficient and further nutrition is required.
Weaning should begin at around 6 months and not before 17 weeks.
It is important to realise that weaning is a gradual process, and can be an emotional time, but it is a vital step to ensure the growth and development of your child. Weaning is another milestone in your baby’s development and like so many other milestones will require a lot of patience from you.
Initially you will introduce only small amounts of solid foods to your baby along with their normal milk feed. These solids are new tastes and textures to experience, and the small amounts that you begin with are built up over time, so remember to start gradually with just one or two spoons daily in the beginning.
