When Baby starts crawling around, no matter how much you may watch them accidents do occur, although they’re usually only very minor. However, when your little one bumps their head, it can be a distressing time for all involved.

If your youngster has fallen off the chair or walked into the door, keep in mind the following advice.

1. Minor symptoms to be aware of:

When your little one bumps their head, they are usually ok if they don’t experience any unconsciousness, bleeding or deep cuts. However, it is important that you keep an eye out for the following minor symptoms:

  • A mild headache – difficult to diagnose in a young baby, but they may seem a little irritable or fussier than normal.
  • Drowsiness

2. Major symptoms to be aware of:

  • Unconsciousness either briefly or for long periods of time
  • Bleeding from one or both ears
  • Difficulty staying awake
  • Bruising behind the ears
  • Unusual behaviour
  • Clear fluid form nose or ears

3. When to take them to the doctor

While it is important you ring your GP if your little one experiences any of the above minor symptoms, you should always take them to A&E if they experience any of the major symptoms.

4. 24 hours after: What to watch out for

Even if they have been checked over by a doctor, over the next 24 hours you should keep an eye out for the following symptoms:

  • Change in their colour from pink to pale
  • Shallow breathing
  • Irregular breathing
  • Gasping episodes
  • Twitches on one side of the body
  • Off-balance when sitting or crawling
  • Disorientated
  • Vomiting
  • Crossed or rolling eyes
  • Large pupils

5. How to care for them

While care depends on symptoms, if the injury seems small and a a bump comes up straight away place an ice pack to stop the swelling.

While you should try to keep them awake if possible it is ok to allow your little one to sleep, particularly if it is near nap time. However, you need to check on your baby regularly - if the injury happens at night do wake them every couple of hours to ensure they are ok.
