Seeing your baby’s first tooth come in is a memorable milestone but one that many parents dread because they know what's to come- restless nights, an upset child, and probably lots of crying. If you didn’t know that, well, welcome to teething! Don’t worry though, it’s not all negative, and is an exciting step for your little one that shows they are getting bigger!
What a lot of parents don’t know is how long to expect their child’s teething journey to last for and what to do to really ease the pain in the best way possible. We’re here to help and have broken down what your baby’s teething timeline will probably look like and have shared some top tips to relieve your baby from nasty teething pain.
On average, teething starts at around 6 months of age, but can start as early as 3 months or can begin later, even after they turn one. Your own dental history can play a part in when your little one starts to show their pearly whites.
Signs that your tot has started teething include lots of drooling, wanting to chew or gnaw on things around them, being irritable or them putting their own fist into their mouth to bite on.
In terms of the timeline your child’s teeth will come in at, it varies from baby to baby, but there is a general timescale for what teeth come in and when.
Bottom Teeth
Front teeth: 6-10 months
Teeth either side of front teeth: 7-9 months
Canines: 16-18 months
Molars: 12-14 months
Second Molars: 20-31 months
Top Teeth
Front teeth: 7.5-12 months
Teeth either side of front teeth: 9-13 months
Canines: 18-22 months
Molars: 14-19 months
Second molars: 24-33 months
When your child’s teeth do start to come in, it usually takes each tooth around eight days for it to fully come through the gums to the surface of the mouth. They will probably be irritable during this time but there are many ways to help make them feel better. To help soothe your baby’s teething pain, try some of the tips we’ve listed below!
Teething gel like the Caldebaby Teething Gel is a great option to provide gentle care. It works by cooling and soothing your baby’s sensitive gums. This gel is sugar free and has a honey taste so your little one will enjoy the flavour of the gel while it helps to soothe their gums. Gently massage your baby’s gums 2-3 times a day with the teething gel. The best times are after meals and before sleeping.
A massage on their gums can work wonders to ease their pain. Use a clean finger to gently rub their gums.
A teething ring can be a great distraction from the pain for them. Remember to not put teething toys in the freezer as this will make it too hard and cold for your little one’s mouth. You can pop some of them in the fridge for an extra cooling sensation.
