When it comes to decorating your child’s bedroom, it’s sometimes hard to know where to even start.

You’ve chatted to other mums, looked through countless decorating magazines, and still aren’t sure of many things - from colour charts to bedding and storage.

Here is some sound and simple advice for decorating your little one’s bedroom.

1. Always start with a space plan first. Make a list of what you have and what you need. Then move on to your inspiration for the project.

2. Create a mood board or a Pinterest board first, to collect your ideas before you get started. This will keep you organised, and give you an idea of what direction you're going in before you're even really aware of it yourself.

3. Add meaning. If you have the time and the resources, try to add your personal touch to the space. A meaningful quote, something representative of your little one’s namesake, anything handmade, helps to give the room some character.

4. Be sure to include multiple kinds of lighting in a kid's room. Overall lighting is a necessity but so is a reading light. It may even help them find the bathroom in the middle of the night. Dimmable lighting is a nice touch for bedtime stories and nap time.

5. To help your kids stay organised, keep things at their height. Cupboard storage, benches and coat racks will all be used more often if kids can get to them easily.

6. Try creating a continuous art centre by using wainscoting in a room and painting the wall below with chalkboard paint in the colour of your choice.

7. Removable wall transfers are becoming increasingly affordable and the range of patterns and styles grows every day. Call them temporary wall tattoos and let your kid have fun decorating their room in a way you know you won't have to fix later.

8. Kids are collectors, so make collecting easy. Pictures and postcards don't always have to be stuck to a corkboard. Try hanging them from strings in front of a window or clipping them to a string along the wall to create an interactive border in a room.
