Why a good bedtime routine is so important

We all know how important sleep is for babies and parents. It doesn't take a scientific study to show that everyone is in better form after a good night’s sleep. However, babies’ sleeping habits are fickle and one perfect night could easily be followed by an all-nighter.

Newborns may mix up day and night, but there is a way to encourage a more structured sleeping pattern for your little one, and that is to have a bedtime routine. There are many reasons why establishing a bedtime routine early is important.

  1. A routine will lay the groundwork for the future, and future you will thank present you for the gift of sleep!
  2. Your baby will develop a positive attitude towards bedtime- a godsend during the toddler years!
  3. Babies- and all children- are comforted by routine and structure in general.
  4. You can use this precious time before bed to bond and spend quality time with your little ones.
  5. If your baby sleeps well, you are more likely to get a good night sleep.

But where do you start? How do you establish the right routine for you and your baby?

JOHNSON'S® has come up with a simple 3-step bedtime routine that can be used from birth and is clinically proven to help baby fall asleep faster and spend longer in dreamland.*

Step 1 - Warm Bath
A bath is a great way to start off your new routine. A warm and gentle wash will relax your little one and you can use this time to speak softly, chatting back and forth to baby or singing her a song. Put on some mellow music, maybe classical or some soft jazz, as you wash baby from head to toe. To create an atmosphere of calm that would send anyone off to dreamland, use some fragranced baby wash like JOHNSON'S® Bedtime Baby Bath.

Step 2 - Gentle Massage
Massage is a beautiful way to get your baby feeling relaxed and moisturised. Make sure you use a gentle lotion for this step, we recommend JOHNSON'S® Bedtime Baby Lotion. This lotion uses gentle ingredients and is specifically formulated for baby’s delicate skin. JOHNSON'S® have transformed their products to set a new standard for soft and gentle, exactly what your baba needs for his bedtime massage. Click here for JOHNSON'S® guide to massaging your baby.

Step 3 - Quiet Time
The last step is to keep the atmosphere calm, cosy and quiet. Try to keep the room where your baby sleeps at the recommended temperature of 20-22 degrees Celsius. Also, encourage awareness of night and day by keeping rooms bright and at normal noise level during the day and dark and quiet at night. When you change your little one or feed her in the wee hours, use as little light as possible and speak in hushed tones.
