A woman has spoken of her shock and amazement, after waking up from a coma to discover that she had welcomed her first child 10 days earlier.

Ciara Murray, from Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, welcomed son James in October 2015, after suffering a massive stroke.

The 33-year-old was 37 weeks pregnant, and at home, when she began to feel unwell on October 29. She went to lie down, but collapsed before she could even reach her bed.

It was later in the evening that Ciara’s husband, John, found her on the floor in their bedroom. He called an ambulance, and Ciara was rushed to hospital.

Doctors discovered that Ciara had a blood clot on her brain. In order to save both her and her unborn son, they put the mum-to-be into an induced coma and carried out an emergency procedure.

During the three-hour operation, doctors managed to remove Ciara’s clot. They also delivered baby James via C-section.

10 days later, Ciara awoke to the news that she had become a mum.

She told The Mirror: “They didn’t tell me before the surgery that I was going to give birth. I woke up on November 10, which happened to be my husband’s birthday.”

“Then she told me that I’d had a baby. I couldn’t believe it. John brought him into me, and it was just amazing.”

Ciara, who was left without feeling down her left side, went on to spend a number of months in hospital, receiving treatment.

The doting mum has adapted to life with her little one, who is now 15 months old and ‘thriving’.
