Let me introduce myself, my name is Rose and I am the owner of a small business called Rosie's Eco Store.
The idea for my small business sprouted in 2019 in an effort to make reusable products in the beauty industry to replace the single use ones which end up in landfill. It began with reusable breast pads and face cleansing pads to replace cotton wool rounds. As the catalogue of items I produced grew I became more and more intrigued by feminine health and in particular the amount of plastic in and on sanitary products, and also how condescending I found the big companies advertising to be!
And so came my idea to design and hand make my line of reusable sanitary pads and panty liners. I currently produce 3 sizes/flows and there is also a "my first period pack" which I am very proud of.
Since having the items featured on social media twice, the sales were amazing and the interest is there in women and young girls to make the change. Tampons, pads and panty liners along with their packaging and individual wrapping generate more than 200,000 tonnes of waste per year, and they all contain plastic – in fact, pads are around 90% plastic!
Cloth sanitary pads are made from natural, absorbent materials, like cotton and bamboo. As you would expect, they are washable, meaning they can be reused. Which is also far more appealing than forking out on disposable sanitary pads or tampons every month. Plus they have the added bonus of not looking like another clinical item we need to hide, they are made of fun prints and are bright and interesting which makes you want to use them. Plus the fact the absorbent fleece also is not only more comfortable but better for your vulva. Couple this with the pouches for carrying pads with you and for changing your used one while away from home and we have quite the collection.
Most people’s initial response when they heard about reusable menstrual products used to be ‘ewwww! but that has seen a massive shift. And our sales of reusable sanitary products are increasing each month.
I also make reusable breast pads which are larger than disposables, don't leak through, and are softer on your skin with the bonus of being machine washable, plus they come in an extra absorbent version for those with heavy flow. or for overnight. And my original product which started it all, the reusable face cleansing pads, fun designs which are reusable and better for your skin.
I am delighted you are interested in running a feature on the business and the products as it seems from talking to my customers they are more than willing to make they change but the problem is they don't know where to find the products, or if they do, they are not Irish sites and are very expensive to buy and ship.
