This highly-acclaimed singer has spent much of her career documenting her life experiences through a collecting of stunning and award-winning songs.

As a result of her admirable honesty, the vast majority of Christina Aguilera’s fans and followers are aware that she witnessed domestic abuse while growing up in Pennsylvania.

Reflecting on her decision to reveal this aspect of her family’s history, the mum-of-two opened up while appearing at a recent Hopeline event.

“It’s a subject that really hits home with me because I’ve always been pretty vocal and open about my own experience in witnessing domestic in the home and neighbouring homes around me, so it was something that was pretty constant in my younger upbringing.”

The 34-year-old star goes to great lengths to ensure the subject is discussed and laments that there appears to exist a stigma around the issue.

“It is a hush-hush subject. Not everybody likes to wear it on their sleeve and talk about it. It makes people uncomfortable and there’s a lot of shame around it.”

While the singer acknowledges not everyone is capable of facing their past or dealing with their reality as she did, she hopes her approach to the issue will offer some solace to those in similar situations.

“That’s why for me, it’s so important for me to speak my truth and helping others to find theirs and to find their own hope in a hopeless situation.”

The star, who is the proud mum of seven-year-old Max and one-year-old Summer, has attempted to turn her negative into her children’s positive by offering them the childhood of which she was deprived.

“I definitely know when I was going into making the decision to have children of my own, that I definitely would do my very best to make sure that their environment was safe, that they were emotionally safe and secure, because they were the things that I didn’t have growing up.”

Christina has talked about her experience of witnessing domestic violence and abuse in her songs Oh Mother and I’m OK.
