He may be one of the richest and most successful footballers in the world, but that doesn’t mean parenting is any different - or easier - for Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United star has given a rare but candid insight in his life as a father to sons Kai (six), Klay (three) and Kit (eight months).

In an interview with Mail Online’s FEMAIL, for the NSPCC’s ‘Little Stars Christmas Campaign’, Wayne touched on an important topic for parents everywhere: discipline.

Admitting that he received ‘the occasional smack’ as a child, the 30-year-old insisted that communication is key for him.

“I think the right way to deal with your kids if they are being a bit naughty is to talk to them – talking to them can always help a lot more than smacking them. It’s so important,” he said.

For those of you suggesting the ‘naughty step’, you’re too late – Wayne and Coleen had to scrap that idea, as it just ‘wasn’t working’!

Wayne and Coleen may have their hands full with their little boys, but the footballer is clearly enjoying every precious moment of fatherhood.

On the best parenting advice he was ever given, the doting dad said: “I think just enjoy it, because they grow up so quick. Really enjoy your time with them, because there are moments you might never get back.”

It’s lovely to get a fresh insight into another side of Wayne’s life.
