Male fertility problems: the causes

Male fertility problems: the causes
If you have struggled to conceive and you doctor has determined that you have no fertility issues yourself, then you will definitely want to have your husband checked out. There are a number of things that can contribute to fertility problems in men.

When there is a fertility problem in a man, 90 percent of the time it is low sperm count or the quality of the sperm. Low sperm count is defined as less than 20 million/ml. Sometimes this is treated with fertility drugs. Other times IVF is an option or donor sperm is used.

Sometimes the cause of fertility problems in men is physical. There can be a blockage of the vas deferens or the epididymis, which are the tubes responsible for transporting sperm in the body. In these cases, the treatment is surgery. Other times the root is an infection. Antibiotics will treat the infection, but will not necessarily repair fertility. Hormonal issues can also cause fertility problems in men. This would normally be treated with hormonal medication.

If you have been unable to conceive and the reason is a fertility problem with your husband, there are many options for assisted conception. This news does not mean you will not be able to have a baby. Talk with your doctor to investigate your options.
