He sparked concern over the weekend when he announced that he was to forgo a TV appearance because his mother was ill, and this star has shared a very sad update with fans today.

Sports pundit and former footballer Gary Lineker has today confirmed the news that his mother Margaret has passed away at the age of 76.

The father-of-four took to social media this evening to make the announcement, tweeting: “I am profoundly saddened to tell you that my wonderful, beautiful mother has left us. She will though live on in my heart and mind.”

The 54-year-old pulled out of a scheduled Match of the Day appearance last weekend, confirming that he would not be going ahead with the slot as his mum was ‘very poorly’.

Gary later took to Twitter to thank all those who had sent on messages of support, writing: “Thank you all so much for your good wishes. It’s overwhelming really, and massively appreciated.”

It is believed that the star travelled to the Isle of Wight, where his mother lived, to be with her. No further details have been released at this time.

We’re sending our condolences to Gary and his family on their loss.
