As a big fan of Titanic, I was apprehensive that the return of Kate and Leo would not translate as well when re-released in 2012 – but I could not have been more wrong. If anything, watching the movie on the big screen one more time just reaffirmed my initial reaction…this is a brilliant movie.
There probably isn’t much point in me going through the plot…whether you’ve seen the movie or not, you should have an idea of what happens…Jack and Rose fall in love and the ship sinks…no surprises there. But what really struck me seeing the movie again was how fantastic a pair Winslet and DiCaprio make in this movie. Although there are plenty of cheesy lines through-out the Titanic, every word uttered by the pair is 100% believable. And it is because of the two leads that the ending is so heart-breakingly tragic. And seeing the tragedy unfold all over again on the big screen, I have to admit I cried even more this time around!
I wouldn’t be the biggest fan of 3D but if you are going to see any 3D movie this year, it should be Titanic. The only truly brilliant use of 3D in cinema so far was Avatar, and seeing as James Cameron was at the helm of both movies, it was only expected that Titanic would deliver similar results. As the boat sinks and the water gushes on board, audiences really become part of the terrifying experience (you would nearly want to put on a lifejacket yourself!). The glory of the huge cruise-liner becomes even more impressive in 3D and as the ship dives into the ocean, you can really feel your heart jump as though you were on board.
Of course, there are small aspects that have dated slightly, but this makes the movie all the more loveable. As mentioned already, the script can be very cheesy at times and Billy Zane is totally over-the-top as the villain (his make-up is also pretty awful…something 3D doesn't help) and I never realised how skinny Leonardo DiCaprio was back then. Kate Winslet recently joked that since the movie came out he’s gotten fatter and she’s gotten skinnier…not that she needed to! She is so beautiful in Titanic and her curves in the movie only make her more appealing to Titanic's huge female following.
This is a wonderful piece of cinema that has only been improved with the re-release in 3D and whether you were a fan at the time of its original release or not, MummyPages highly recommend you go see Titanic on the big screen one more time.
