Our bodies are wired to let us know when something is wrong, and there are certain signals and symptoms that we should never, ever ignore. Here are 10 that you should always be aware of.

1. Chest pain

If you feel a pain or pressure in your chest area, always go to your doctor for a check-up, as this could signal an underlying heart condition.

2. Breast lumps

Any abnormality within or on the surface of your breasts should be examined by your doctor. While many such lumps turn out to be benign cysts that can be removed, there could be something more sinister at play.

3. Extreme fatigue

Anyone can find themselves exhausted at the end of a particularly stressful week, but if you can’t seem to shake this exhaustion, there could be something more serious going on. Tiredness that can’t be cured with rest and a healthy diet and exercise regime could indicate depression, diabetes, cancer, or heart or thyroid conditions.

4. Crippling headaches

A persistent and serious headache is always a warning sign that you need to get a second opinion. This could be a symptom of stroke, or it could be indicating the presence of a tumour or aneurysm.

5. Running to the toilet

If you are urinating excessively, but your fluid intake is the same as always, go and book an appointment with your doctor. Excessive urination is often a symptom of diabetes and many bladder disorders.

6. Unexplained weight loss

If the weight is falling off you without any effort or explanation, there is a potentially serious underlying problem. In the most extreme cases, it could be a symptom of colon cancer.

7. Abdominal pain

This could be a signal of appendicitis, gallbladder problems, or a stomach ulcer, so be sure to arrange a check-up with your GP.

8. Swollen legs

While many of us will experience swelling around the time of our period, unusual and prolonged swelling could be the result of a blood clot.

9. Abnormal vaginal bleeding/ discharge

These are the potential warning signs of uterine or endometrial conditions which, if left unchecked and untreated, could be extremely serious. Don’t ignore the signs – the first sight of any abnormal fluids should be reported to your doctor.

10. Throbbing teeth

It is hard to ignore any kind of pain in or around your teeth, mouth and jaw, as it will get in the way of everything you turn your attention to. A throbbing tooth could be a signal of nerve damage, which is something that you will want to get checked out immediately, before any further damage occurs.
