You don’t have to wait until your baby is walking and talking to be able to play games with them; there are plenty of activities that you can do together that not only help you bond but also play a role in their development.

Hide and seek

Take a soft ball or teddy and show it to your youngster before moving it out of their eye line. Ask ‘where did the ball go?’ before taking it from behind your back and showing it to them. This will help them learn that even though they can’t see an item it is still there.

Peek-a-boo

Hide your face behind your hands and say ‘where did mummy go?’ Then move your hands away from your face and say 'peek-a-boo'. This is a really popular game with young kids and again helps them learn that even if they can't see you, you are still there.

Stack the cups

This is a great game for when your little one is able to sit up on their own. Simply gather together a number of plastic cups or blocks and stack them up. When the tower is finished let them knock it down. This will teach your youngster about shapes and cause and effect.

Touch and texture

Gather together about five or six items with various textures: leaves, cotton wool, socks, silk scarves and paper all feel very different - let your little one have a feel of each one, describing it as they do. This is a great way to introduce your infant to touch and feel.

Catch the ball

Another great one for when your youngster is able to sit up. Gently place your little one on the ground, you can prop them up against the back of the couch, and simply roll a ball to each other. This will help with their hand eye coordination.

Match the colours

Get four red, four blue, four yellow and four green items and lay them out in front of your child. Mix them up and put blue with blue, red with red and so on, naming each colour as you do it. This is a great way to introduce your little one to colours and matching.

Burst the bubbles

Blow bubbles at your baby, making sure it doesn’t go near their face or eyes, and encourage your little one to pop them. This is fun and a great way to help with hand eye coordination.
