It takes a lot of courage to speak up about something like this and we’re really glad to see so many women take that brave step in recent weeks. First there was the incredible Emma Murphy from Dublin who posted a video of her injuries, along with a plea for more to be done for women in that situation and now this mum-of-five is stepping up.

Becky O’Brien, who made it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent and was honest about her past during interviews, has spoken at this year’s Women’s Aid National Conference about her own experience of domestic abuse.

Becky married her now-ex-husband Stephen Moonesamy in 2009, who then fractured her jaw three days after she went into premature labour with twins, Chloe and Toby. Stephen carried the attack out in the hospital where his wife was staying and was subsequently given a suspended sentence in 2010. Becky hasn't seen him in three years.

Calling for more to be done to prevent incidents of domestic violence, the 34-year-old English teacher said: “People often choose partners that have similar characteristics to their own parents so if a child has grown up in a home where a partner is abusive, then they themselves are more likely to choose someone that will behave in the same way.

“We need to stop this pattern and the best way to do this is by educating children as soon as possible.”

Speaking about her personal experience, she said: “I was constantly smoking to help me relieve some stress, I was losing my hair and I couldn’t express my own opinions without feeling scared. I was living in a nightmare and I didn’t know how to get out.”
