Can you get a flu shot when pregnant?

When pregnant is important to take every precaution to ensure you remain healthy and strong, but are flu shots safe when you are pregnant? Also, with the recent threat of H1N1 there are two different flu shots to be concerned about.

Well, breathe easily because it is not only safe, but recommended, that pregnant mothers get both the seasonal and H1N1 shots when they are available. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) both support this recommendation.

The reason these vaccines are recommended is that catching the flu while pregnant is more serious than taking the vaccine. It is important to note that the vaccine includes an inactive version of the virus. The nasal spray vaccine is the actual live virus and should be avoided for pregnant mothers.

It does not matter which trimester you are in, if the seasonal or H1N1 flu shots are available and you are up for yours, then it is wise to visit your doctor and request the vaccines. However, the flu shot is not for everyone. If you are allergic to eggs or have ever had a serious reaction to a flu shot then talk to your physician before getting the vaccine.
