The lens of your eye is mostly made up of  protein. The protein is arranged in such a way that it keeps the lens clear and allows light to pass through. As we age, some of this protein can clump together which can begin to cloud a small area of the lens. This is how a cataract is formed and over time, it may grow larger and cloud more of the lens making it increasingly difficult to see.

There is no known reason as to why cataracts develop. New studies suggest that increased exposure to UV light may be responsible and experts are recommending sunglasses and wide brimmed hats are worn.

There is also evidence to suggest that a diet that is high in vitamin A (beta-carotene), vitamin C and E, and antioxidants can help prevent cataracts.
