The last thing any young family expects to receive as they are just starting out together is a terminal cancer diagnosis, but that is exactly the situation that Amanda Collins and her husband, Jamie, from Ayrshire have found themselves in.
Jamie visited his doctor in December 2015, complaining of a lump in his foot; the 26-year-old returned to the GP “seven or eight times” before a biopsy confirmed the family’s worst fears: he had cancer.
The dad-of-one was diagnosed with clear-cell sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the connective tissues such as bone, muscle, fat and tendons.
Talking to West FM News, Amanda explained how the cancer had spread from “his foot to his knee to his groin and his abdomen”, and doctors gave him less than six months.
Jamie has to go through chemotherapy before being allowed to try a new drug that has not yet been proven to help, but is "determined to fight it".
The couple, who met three years ago, celebrated their young daughter’s second birthday just yesterday, and family and friends are determined Jamie, Amanda and Luna will get to enjoy one last holiday together so they can make memories for Luna.
A crowd-funding page was set up by Vicki Beddall to raise funds to send the family of three on the holiday of a lifetime: "Please, please help me to at least give them a holiday to remember. A holiday so they can make memories, memories for Luna, photographs of laughter and fun, one last time. Please. For Luna."
