It is recommended that children have their first eye exam at six months and a repeat exam at the age of three. Bringing your child to regular eye exams is the best way to detect hyperopia. School screenings do not typically detect hyperopia so it is imperative that you schedule regular comprehensive eye exams with your optometrist.Your child or teenager's eye sight can deteriorate until he is in his twenties so regular eye exams are vital.

A comprehensive eye exam involves reading letters on a chart that is placed at a specific distance. Using a retinoscope, your optician or optometrist will be able to conduct a refractive evaluation to determine whether your eyes focus light rays exactly on the retina at a distance or up close.  The optometrist will then use a phoropter to measure the amount of the refractive error which will involve him slipping various lenses in and out of your child’s field of view. This will indicate whether your child is nearsighted or farsighted.
