Music icon Elton John yesterday called for the boycott of Italian designers Dolce and Gabanna following some ill-advised comments made by the pair in an interview with an Italian magazine.

The pair, who were once romantically involved, appeared to pour scorn on children born through IVF, saying: "No chemical offsprings and rented uterus. Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed."

Taking offence at the insensitive comments, Sir Elton John took to Instagram to express his disgust, saying: "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic?'"

With a whole host of famous faces within the fashion industry siding with the Candle in the Wind singer, the designers have decided to clarify their comments.

In a statement released by Domenico Dolce, he said: "I was talking about my personal view, without judging other people’s choices and decisions. I’m Sicilian and I grew up in a traditional family, made up of a mother, a father and children."

Expressing awareness that his comments may not have been met kindly by everyone, the statement continued: "I am very well aware of the fact that there are other types of families and they are as legitimate as the one I’ve known… But in my personal experience, family had a different configuration. That is the place where I learnt the values of love and family."

Referring to the controversy provoked by his questionable remarks, the designer went on to say: "It was never our intention to judge other people’s choices. We do believe in freedom and love. We firmly believe in democracy and the fundamental principle of freedom of expression that upholds it."

We wonder if the statement will be enough to placate those offended by the designer's remarks.
