The baby boom is continuing at Dublin Zoo, with the wonderful news that an eastern bongo calf has joined the animal family!

The new arrival, born last week on the African Plains, weighed in at 20kg, and is the first calf for mum and dad Nanyuki and Hodari.

With the species currently critically endangered, with possibly less than 100 eastern bongos thought to exist in the Kenyan wilderness, this springtime arrival is very significant for the team at Dublin Zoo.

The birth brings the bongo herd up to four now.

Commenting on the wonderful news of the new arrival, Dublin Zoo’s team leader Helen Clarke-Bennett said: “We are delighted to report that we have a fine, healthy bongo calf who is feeding well and has already been introduced to its father. We don’t know the gender of the calf as yet but the first-time mum Nanyuki is proving an excellent mother.”

These beautifully colourful bongos are characterised by their reddish-brown coat, black and white markings, white-yellow stripes and long, spiralled horns.

What lovely news!
