Barack Obama has shared some wise advice with the women of the world. The former President of the United States delivered a speech at a special event hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The father-of-two spoke about his daughters, 19-year-old Malia and 16-year-old Sasha. He told the audience three key pieces of advice that he hopes will help the young women “shape the world.”

Obama said contributing to society is something we should all make time for. He encouraged people to remember that you don’t always have to make a grand gesture, even the smallest contributions can make a difference, whether that’s volunteering in a charity shop for one morning a week or using your painting skills to spruce up the local old folk’s home.

He says, “You don't have to go out and lead the protest march.”

He then went on to share that he tells his daughters to put their talents and strengths to beneficial use, “There are a lot of different ways to make a contribution and I try to emphasize that to them as well."

Obama understands that growing up can be very overwhelming. He acknowledged the fact that his daughters have a lot more responsibilities now compared to when they were ten years old.

The dad joked and said all they had to worry about when they were babies was when they “wanted to go potty.”

Barack and Michelle try their best to instill good morals in their teenage daughters. They have focused on teaching their daughters to be kind, hardworking, empathetic and considerate of others.

He said, “These are the tools by which you can shape the world around you in a way that feels good.”

His final word of advice was to be as patient as possible. He stated that even though life can be challenging, it’s important to maintain calm and level-headed.

Obama is aware that there are so many passionate young people out there who want to change the world for the better.

He empathised with them because change takes time and doesn’t tend to happen in the blink of an eye, “We get disappointed and we get frustrated.”

He believes that he owes a lot to his role as a community organiser in Chicago, which taught him numerous life lessons. He believes being persistent is key.

Barack Obama hopes these little nuggets of advice will lead his daughters and the young people of the world down successful paths.
