We love reading a scientific study that actually delivers good news, because most of them tend to remind us that we don't live like we should.
However, when a study tells us that coffee is actually good for us, we cannot help but jump for joy!
According to a new study published in Nature Medicine - from researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School - coffee can relieve pain.
Yep, you read that correctly; a cup of coffee can actually have the same effect on pain as over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen.
The theory is especially effective for people who suffer from chronic pain from issues like arthritis or migraines.
"We found that five consecutive days of moderate sleep deprivation can significantly exacerbate pain sensitivity over time in otherwise healthy mice,” explained the Boston-based research team.
When these mice were sleep-deprived and more sensitive to pain, traditional painkillers - including morphine - proved to be less effective in relieving said pain.
The researchers then gave the mice some caffeine, which helped with reliving some of the sensitivity.
However, with all good news comes a serious catch, with the researchers concluding: “We predict that caffeine will contribute to analgesia only in sleep-deprived individuals.”
So basically, coffee will only work as a pain killer if you're sleep deprived - which the vast majority of us mums are, right?
