The best thing about buying clothes is that it means you immediately have something clean to wear.

However, if the latest findings are anything to go by you'll be stuffing your new jeans in the washing machine as soon as you take them home...

According to Dr Lisa Ackerley, The Hygiene Doctor and Dettol expert, we are putting ourselves at risk of skin infections, cold and flu viruses and athlete's foot (from new shoes) by not washing clothes we've just bought.

"Viruses such as cold, flu and norovirus can survive on fabrics and hard surfaces for up to 48 hours, " Dr Ackerley told the MailOnline.

"So if someone has tried on a garment whilst suffering from a cold or flu, then the viruses could survive a day or so and spread or cause infection."

And while she does highlight how clothes that are not dyed, made from natural fibres or from an 'easy iron' range, put you at a lower risk of catching something, we'll definitely be washing EVERYTHING before it goes near our skin from now on.
