She has been speaking out unapologetically about every issue from body image to the expectations placed on a first-time mum, and now Hollywood actress and mum-of-two Zoe Saldana has taken aim at attitudes towards mothers in the movie industry.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star, who welcomed twin sons Bowie and Cy six months ago, has hit out at Hollywood movie bosses for neglecting actresses after they become mothers.

In an interview in promotion of her new movie, Infinitely Polar Bear, the 37-year-old called out the everyday sexism that acting mums experience, saying: “Studios spend more money sometimes perking up male superstars in a movie.”

She explained: “But then a woman comes in going, ‘Ok, I have a child. You’re taking me away from my home. You’re taking my children away from their home. And you’re going to make me work a lot more hours than I usually would if I was home. Therefore, I would have to pay for this nanny for more hours – so I kind of need that.’ And they go, ‘Nope, we don’t pay for nannies.’”

Zoe even went on to reveal how news of her pregnancy was greeted by certain people in the industry, with some reactions leaving her feeling very frustrated.

“I heard through the grapevine there was even a conversation of me being written off of one of the projects. I was like, ‘Oh God, are you kidding me?’…As a woman in my thirties, I finally am in love and I am finally starting my life, and it’s screwing your schedule up? Really?” she told USA Today.

We must say, while it is awful to hear, we are not surprised by Zoe’s experience. Let’s hope that her comments will go some way towards changing things in the industry.
