How do I cut a mango?

Although mangos are a delicious fruit that are ideal for making smoothies or salsa, they are slippery and slimy and can be difficult to cut.
  • Make sure your mango is ripe but still firm. When a mango is too ripe it can turn into a pile of mush when trying to cut it into pieces.
  • The pit in the centre of the mango is relatively flat and oblong. You must aim to cut along the sides of the pit, separating the flesh from the pit. Hold you mango with one hand and stand it with the stem side down. By standing the mango like this you will have a good idea of the alignment of the pit inside. Use a sharp knife to cut from the top and down one side of the pit. Then repeat this on the other side. You should then have three pieces – two halves and a middle section where the pit is.
  • Take one half and make cuts down and across the mango. Do not cut through the peel.
  • You might be able to peel the pieces of mango off with you fingers. If not, then use a small paring knife to cut away the peel.
  • Take the pieces with the pit and lay it flat on a cutting board. Then use the paring knife to cut out the pit and take off the peel.
