Prince William has admitted that he still ‘has shock within him’ over the death of his beloved mother, in a new TV show.
The father-of-two opened up about losing his mother, Princess Diana, at the age of 15 in an interview with BBC One, for the documentary Mind Over Marathon, set to air this week.
“I still have shock within me – people say it can’t last that long, but it does,” said William, in the candid new interview.
“The shock is the biggest thing I still feel 20 years later, about my mother. You never get over it, it’s such an unbelievably big moment in your life that it never leaves you. You just learn to deal with it.”
The 34-year-old’s latest comments come just days after his younger brother, 32-year-old Harry, bravely revealed how he was ‘close to a breakdown’ after failing to process his own grief.
Harry, who was just 12 years old when Princess Diana died in a car crash, bared his soul to The Telegraph, admitting that he had shut down his emotions over the tragedy.
“I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had quite a serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well,” he said.
“I have probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions, when all sorts of grief and sort of lies and misconceptions and everything are coming at you from every angle.”
Harry, who is currently dating Suits actress Meghan Markle, went on to pay tribute to his big brother for encouraging him to face his issues head-on, through counselling.
“It’s all about timing. And for me personally, my brother, you know – bless him – he was a huge support to me. He kept saying this is not right, this is not normal, you need to talk to someone about stuff, it’s OK,” he revealed.
It seems these comforting words made a huge impact for Harry, who added: “I started to have a few conversations and actually, all of a sudden, all of this grief that I have never processed started to come to the forefront and I was like, there is actually a lot of stuff here that I need to deal with.”
As you can imagine, the princes have been lauded for speaking out about such a personal topic, and encouraging others to seek help if they need it.
