He has rarely in the past opened up about his emotions and experience following the death of his beloved mother, but Prince William broke tradition during his latest appearance.

The Prince delivered a stirring speech at last night’s gala dinner to mark the 21st anniversary of Child Bereavement UK, an organisation which the late Princess Diana helped to launch.

Now a patron of the organisation himself, the father-of-two paid a moving tribute to Diana during his address.

“Twenty-one years ago last month, my mother attended the launch of the Child Bereavement Charity. Fifteen years later, I was honoured to be invited to become Patron of Child Bereavement UK to continue my mother’s commitment to a charity which is very dear to me,” he began.

Describing grief as “the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure”, the Prince said that becoming a parent had given him an entirely new appreciation of the organisation’s work.

“Amid all this misery, CBUK…brings warmth, comfort, a guiding hand, a way through, even colour and joyfulness, and a renewed opportunity for love as a family re-knits itself after tragedy. As a father to two young children, I now appreciate it all the more,” he added.

William’s powerful words came on the same day that he adorably described his daughter, Princess Charlotte, as “very ladylike”.
