Since the birth of his son in April, John Stamos has graduated from the beloved uncle of his Full House days and fully embraced his new role as a first-time father.

He shares his son Billy with his wife, actress Caitlin McHugh, and says that fatherhood is 'beautiful'.

“Every second you pray that you can keep the kid alive," he told People, "Every day is different, time has become very elusive, stuff just goes by so fast. It’s just beautiful. I’ve cried most days; I just stare at him.”

We know those overwhelming early baby days well!

Of course, along with this infatuation comes the nitty-gritty of parenting, too.

"I went to a meeting with spit-up milk on my knee and my shirt was wet still from pee. That’s my style," the 54-year-old joked.

"I’ve really neglected myself. In fact I’ve really got so gosh darn fat! I’m going to Pilates right now.”

He added, "People over the years have said, ‘Wow, you look so young!’ Get ready, folks, ’cause now I’m going to show them I look my age and I’m older.”

The General Hospital alum also shared his upcoming Father's Day plans. It will be an emotional one, as his son is named after his own father, Billy.

“I know I’ll be crying a lot. I’ve been writing Billy a letter that I’m putting away for him to read when he’s 18," John said.

"I’ll probably continue writing that, and I’ll certainly try to honour my father.”

The former ER star said has high hopes for his son's future, in spite of how the world we're living in can feel like a scary and troubled place at times.

"I think most of us are searching, even subconsciously, to find what’s missing from our lives: grace, charity, kindness, and peace, and family, and community and friendship," he said.

John continued, "I just hope this world is a better place for Billy when he starts to understand what it’s all about. And I just want to be an example to him. I have a real responsibility now. I’ve never really had real responsibility.”

As for himself, the American actor is feeling optimistic.

“I thought it was beyond me to have a kid and a great wife, but it’s given me a reason to live," he said, "Life is in session now.”
